The Ministry's website provides good information on adoption services and links to other information sites. There are 2 ways to adopt in BC, either through the Ministry of Children and Family Development or through one of 6 licensed agencies in BC.
The Ministry is responsible for thousands of children in foster care in BC, with many of these available for adoption. They have varying degrees of special needs: behavioural, emotional and / or physical. Low-risk infant adoptions are no longer done through the Ministry, but are arranged through one of 6 private licensed agencies on a fee-for-service basis. Information about these agencies is available through Ministry staff or its website and through the Adoptive Families Association of BC (see separate description).
